Asus and Green IT

Notebook and PC developer Asus has long been synonymous with educational hardware, but now you might want to start linking them with the green movement.  This year at BETT they put several products on display that save energy and resources here are a few:

. The VESA-mountable, economic Eee Box, the world’s smallest PC that consumes up to a penny-saving 90% less power than conventional PCs, and which can be mounted, for instance, at the back of a computer monitor.

. The new Eee Top all-in-one touchscreen PC is ideally suited to the classroom with options on either desk or wall mounting.

.  N series notebooks, attaining the world’s first EU Flower Eco Certification for computers, and the EuP Certification for notebooks.  Thus showing ASUS’ environmental dedication.

Acer’s 10 inch netbook is confirmed

Taken from the blokes at www.liliputing.com:

The folks at TechRadar have confirmed that Acer’s rumored 10 inch netbook is real, and it should begin shipping in February. The image above is taken from a Macles article from earlier this month. Unfortunately while TechRadar says it saw the new Aspire One netbook at Acer’s booth at the BETT 2009 trade show, they were unable to snap any photos.

The new mini-laptop reportedly looks a lot like the 8.9 inch version of the Acer Aspire One, but you know, it has a larger screen and keyboard. Possibly the most exciting change is in the touchpad layout. Instead of having mouse buttons on the side of the touchpad like the original Aspire One, the new model has a button below the touchpad. I’m not sure if the new machine has two distinct buttons for left and right or a single button with a rocker. I’m hoping for the former, but kind of expecting the latter based on TechRadar’s description.

The netbook will come in red, white, and black colors, sport s 10.1 inch, 1024  x 600 pixel display and have optional Bluetooth and 3G components built in.

Meru Networks

BETT 2009 is off and running.  The stands are buzzing and the people are mingling.

Take time to go visit MOOPIC at stand W9 (my favorite alpha numeric combination).

From the BETT site:

Moopic, is a collaboration between teacher Philip Davis and software developer Cobwebb Communications Ltd. This partnership merged multi sensory creative learning techniques with beautifully designed, intuitive and easy to use technology. Moopic aims to develop software that can be used by all learners whether individually, in small groups or whole classes on interactive whiteboards.

Moopic has developed Picture the Music, a whole class activity that gets children writing creatively. It is a learning technique supported by software and other resources that fires the imagination of students and enthuses them to write.

As BETT Opens Promethean Unleashes Big News

The trend in media has been to go from tangible copies to a digital format.  CDs became MP3s and DVDs are becoming streaming videos or files in our hard drives.  Media in the classroom has long come in the form of textbooks, film strips and ready-to-copy packets.  However, as technology has progressed new opportunities are being realized.  The push to divert funds from print materials to digital resources in schools is as strong as it has ever been.  I recently came across two articles showing a common desire from within the education industry to move forward in regards to teaching resources.  The first is piece from Randy Wilhelm, CEO of Thinkronize, about different learning styles and how traditional print materials fail to meet a student’s need to learn as effectively possible.  The second is a response to Wilhelm’s article by Michele King, a 1st grade teacher turned school administrator.

Promethean has been at the forefront of education technology for years and they aren’t about to be caught napping on this topic.  The producer of Activstudio has provided teaching resources for their interactive whiteboards through their site www.prometheanplanet.com.  To celebrate the launch of their Premium Content section they have partnered with the global leader in publishing Dorling Kindersley.  This partnership will bring a series of animated and informative teaching resources for the interactive whiteboard.  Furthermore, the ‘Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Activpacks’ will be available exclusively through Promethean’s online teaching community, which now expands over 250,000 members.  The Premium Content section and partnership with Dorling Kindersley will allow teachers to have more options in regards to planning lessons and more freedom when configuring lessons to meet a student’s particular learning style.  These “Activpacks” are available for immediate download and utilization at a reasonable price point (£5.99/$7.50).  Finally, these resources are extremely versatile and teachers can create lessons using the content to tailor the lesson to the specific pupil, class needs or subject requirements.

When educators voice their opinions and companies aiming to support them listen, wonderful things can happen.  The movement towards an increase of digital resources in schools is in full swing.  Understanding the importance of knowing your consumer has led Promethean and Dorling Kindersley to accommodate this movement through innovative offerings that help teachers engage students with new ideas and fresh executions.

Primary Technology

Primary Email will be on display at stand: N59 this year.  Primary Email is a program that helps protect children and promotes school collaboration.  Based on Microsoft Exchange, this program runs well on Outlook and wireless devices, enabling teachers and staff to email students whenever and where ever.

If you are looking for an email solution for your school make sure you stop by stand N59 and learn about what Primary Email has to offer.
